Balancing Act: Understanding pH for Odor Control

Balancing Act: Understanding pH for Odor Control

by Sarah Thomas

pH and pH balanced are terms we see everywhere, but what do they actually mean, and how important is pH in regard to odor control and skincare?

It’s a pretty big deal, so let’s explore a few concepts about pH in general, our skin’s pH, and how a product’s pH can have a bearing on its effectiveness.

What Does pH Stand For?

pH actually stands for power of hydrogen (sometimes also potential of hydrogen). Why is the p small? Apparently, it is a mathematical symbol that means negative logarithm. If that doesn’t clear anything up for you, join the club.

The H is capitalized because it is the symbol of the element hydrogen, which is always capitalized. I can wrap my brain around that one.

At any rate, pH level is based on how acidic or alkaline something is and is usually measured on a scale of 0 - 14. Water is neutral on the scale, at 7 - so anything with a pH higher than 7 is considered alkaline or basic, and anything lower than a 7 is considered acidic.

Our skin has a slightly acidic pH of 4.7 - 5.75. Products we put on our skin should ideally fall within this range.

What Does pH Balanced Mean?

pH balanced is really more of a marketing term, but it refers to a substance or solution that has a pH level close to the ideal pH level for a particular particular part of the human body.

The pH scale measures the acidity or alkalinity of a substance, ranging from 0 to 14, where 7 is considered neutral. A pH below 7 indicates acidity, while a pH above 7 indicates alkalinity.

For example, when referring to skin care products, "pH balanced" means the product is formulated to match the skin's natural pH level, typically around 5.5. This helps to maintain the skin's natural protective barrier and prevent irritation or dryness.

What Happens If pH Is Too High?

The skin has a thin, delicate, natural barrier called the acid mantle. This barrier is made up of oil and sweat from our bodies and protects skin from pathogens. If you use products that are too alkaline, the acid mantle can become stripped away, resulting in red, irritated, dry, and flaky skin.

Using harsh or drying cleansers, deodorant containing baking soda, and skin care products with ingredients like sodium lauryl sulfates are among the common causes.

pH Balanced vs pH Optimized

At Lume, we like to say that our products are pH optimized. What we mean is that we understand skin is happiest when it is slightly acidic, so our formulas are acidic - first and foremost, to support Whole Body odor control.

Odor causing bacteria thrive in a basic or alkaline environment. By optimizing the pH level of our deodorant and body care products, Lume is able to control odor while also providing an array of spectacular benefits to your skin.
